MOGADISHU, Somalia — A domestic passenger plane operated by StarSky crash-landed at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport on Tuesday after an engine malfunction, aviation sources told Arlaadi Media Network.
The aircraft, en route to Galkacyo, sustained damage to its wings during the crash-landing. All 50 passengers on board were unharmed, and no injuries were reported.
Somali authorities moved quickly to reassure the public about airport safety. State Minister for Aviation Abdikarim Abdow Haydar told Arlaadi Media Network that the government is committed to modernising airport infrastructure and urged domestic carriers to replace ageing aircraft with newer models to reduce risks.
The European Union’s envoy to Somalia, Francesca D.M., praised the swift response of rescue teams, describing the incident as “traumatic” for passengers but welcoming the fact that everyone survived without injury. She extended her sympathy to those on board.
Nevertheless, the crash-landing highlights ongoing concerns about aviation safety in Somalia, where authorities are continuing efforts to modernise domestic airports and improve airline safety standards.
