MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia has been formally authorised to begin printing the East African Community (EAC) passport, marking a significant step in the country’s regional integration efforts.
Ilyas Ali Hassan, Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania and Permanent Representative to the East African Community(EAC), handed over the official approval to Interior Minister General Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail and the Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency, Mustafa Sheikh Ahmed Dhuxulow.
The decision grants the Federal Government of Somalia permission to produce the EAC passport and adopt its standardised security features.
The announcement comes a day after Somalia and Tanzania signed a bilateral agreement, paving the way for closer cooperation. Under the new arrangement, Somalia will officially begin printing the EAC passport from December 2025.
The move represents a notable diplomatic milestone for the Somalia, reinforcing its commitment to regional integration.
It is also expected to facilitate easier movement for Somali citizens within EAC member states, in line with the bloc’s objectives of promoting free movement of people, goods and services across the region.
