HELSINKI, Finland – A tragic fire in Pähkinärinne, Vantaa, has claimed the lives of a Somali family of six, leaving a baby as the sole survivor. Finnish authorities suspect the blaze, which broke out early Tuesday, was deliberately set, according to Iltalehti, a Helsinki-based tabloid.
The family—mother, father, and three children—were well-known in the local Somali community. Faarah Mohamed, who knew the family, said they were “a calm, close-knit household.” Community members Shire Mohamuud and Keinaan Mohamed said they learned of the tragedy via a Somali WhatsApp group early in the morning.
“The area is usually peaceful. The news of a suspected crime has hit us very hard,” they said.
Sharmarke Said Aw-Musse, imam at the Myyrmäki Mosque, said one family member attended the mosque regularly. He confirmed that crisis support would be provided to the community and a memorial service would be arranged in line with the family’s wishes.
“The mosque’s doors are always open. We are now focused on supporting the family’s relatives in this tragic situation,” he said.
The fire department received the first alert at approximately 05:40 local time, and police reported five deaths by 08:45. According to Iltalehti reporter Jatta Lapinkangas, the fire spread across several floors of the building. Police have taken a suspect into custody but have not disclosed further details. The Accident Investigation Board Finland (Otkes) is also investigating.
The Pähkinärinne area, located on the outskirts of Vantaa, is typically considered quiet and residential, making the fire and its suspected criminal origins particularly shocking for locals. Authorities are expected to hold a press conference at 12:30 local time to provide updates on the investigation.
Nevertheless, this tragedy has deepened concerns among Finland’s Somali community, which has faced several fatal incidents in recent years. In October 2023, a fire in Hakunila killed a mother and her four children, while last summer multiple children drowned in separate incidents.
