BAIDOA- Somalia’s House of the People Speaker, Aadan Mohamed Nur (Aadan Madobe), has been elected president of South West State after securing an overwhelming victory in a parliamentary vote, according to the Federal Elections Commission.
Mr Madobe received 88 votes from regional lawmakers, while his sole challenger, Abdiaziz Mohamed Jawari, secured just one vote, delivering a decisive mandate to the veteran politician.
The election marks a significant political development for South West State, one of Somalia’s federal member states, as leaders seek to strengthen governance and stability in the region.
Following the announcement of the results, Mr Madobe thanked members of parliament for their support and confidence in his leadership.
He pledged to focus on promoting unity among communities, advancing reconciliation efforts, and strengthening democratic institutions across South West State.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated Mr Madobe on his victory, describing the election as an important achievement for the country’s democratic development.
In a statement, President Mohamud praised what he called the “political maturity” demonstrated by lawmakers and candidates during the electoral process. He also commended the high level of participation in the vote, saying the election represented a milestone in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic governance.
The president urged residents and political leaders in South West State to work together to promote unity, peace and development across the region.
Political observers say the scale of Mr Madobe’s victory reflects broad parliamentary backing and could provide his administration with a strong foundation to pursue its policy agenda in the years ahead.
The Federal Elections Commission formally declared Mr Madobe the winner, making him the new president of South West State.
