EU Missions Deepen Cooperation to Strengthen Somalia’s Security Forces

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Senior officials from two European Union missions in Somalia visited the Federal Darwish Training Centre (FDTC) in Mogadishu, underscoring their cooperation in developing the country’s security forces.

Brig. Gen. Ivan Falasca, force commander of the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM Somalia), and Kęstutis Lančinskas, head of mission of the European Union Capacity Building Mission in Somalia (EUCAP Somalia), toured the centre to highlight their complementary roles in strengthening Somali security institutions.

The Federal Darwish Training Centre plays an important role in preparing Federal Darwish officers for policing and stabilisation duties, contributing to efforts to develop more professional and capable security forces.

Combining European Training Expertise

The visit highlighted how the two EU missions coordinate their support for Somalia’s security sector. EUCAP Somalia contributes police capacity-building expertise, while EUTM Somalia provides specialised military training, including firearms training and instruction in countering improvised explosive devices, known as C-IED.

The cooperation reflects the European Union’s integrated approach to security assistance in Somalia, bringing together different areas of expertise to support the development of national institutions.

By coordinating their training activities, the missions aim to strengthen the capabilities of Somali security personnel and improve their readiness to carry out their responsibilities.

Supporting Somali-Led Security

The collaboration at the Federal Darwish Training Centre forms part of broader EU efforts to support Somalia in building sustainable security capabilities under Somali leadership.

Both missions contribute through distinct but complementary mandates, with an emphasis on professional training, institutional capacity and the long-term development of Somalia’s security sector.

Their continued coordination is intended to help Somali institutions assume greater responsibility for security and contribute to lasting stability across the country.
