BAYDHABO, Somalia – In a significant counterterrorism operation, Somalia’s South West State forces successfully “targeted and neutralized” Moalim Aadan Qaadiid, a senior Al-Shabab operative known for his involvement in extortion and militant activities.
The raid took place on Sunday night in the Kooney settlement of Berdale town, senior security officials confirmed to Arlaadi Media Network.
According to officials, the operation was meticulously planned and executed to dismantle key elements of the Al-Qaeda-linked group operating in the region.
Qaadiid had long been under surveillance for his role in extorting local businesses and residents to finance Al-Shabab’s activities.
A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the significance of the operation, stating, “This marks a substantial victory in our ongoing efforts to weaken Al-Shabab’s influence. By eliminating high-ranking members, we disrupt their operational capabilities and send a strong message that South West State is committed to eradicating terrorism.”
Residents of Berdale reported hearing gunfire during the raid but confirmed that security forces swiftly restored order in the area. No civilian casualties were reported in the operation.
Al-Shabab, which has been waging an insurgency against the Somali government and its allied forces, continues to target security personnel, government officials, and civilians in its bid to impose a strict version of Islamic law.
However, recent coordinated offensives by Somali security forces, backed by international partners, have led to significant territorial losses for the group.
Authorities in South West State reiterated their commitment to maintaining pressure on Al-Shabab through continued intelligence-led operations.
Officials urged local communities to collaborate with security forces by providing crucial information to help eliminate the remaining militant networks.
This latest development underscores the Somali government’s intensified counterterrorism measures aimed at ensuring stability in regions previously plagued by insurgent activities. The elimination of Qaadiid is expected to further weaken Al-Shabab’s extortion network.
