MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has announced plans to deploy “fresh tactics and modern equipment” to enhance counter-terrorism efforts and strengthen the Somali National Army (SNA) in its fight against the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group, Al-Shabab.
The Prime Minister made these remarks during his Eid Day visit to No. 50 area in the Lower Shabelle region, a known hotspot for Al-Shabab activity and a key battleground in ongoing military operations.
“Our government is committed to implementing new strategies that will empower our forces and increase their morale,” PM Barre stated. “We are introducing modern technology and equipment to ensure the success of counter-terrorism operations across the country.”
No. 50 area, a strategically significant location southwest of Mogadishu, has been a focal point in the Somali government’s recent military campaigns against Al-Shabab. The group continues to pose a significant security threat, conducting attacks on government forces and civilian populations.
The Prime Minister’s visit underscored the government’s determination to bolster security efforts and support frontline troops. During his address, he reiterated the federal government’s commitment to eradicating the militant presence and stabilizing the region.
This announcement comes as Somalia intensifies its military offensive against Al-Shabab, with support from international partners, including the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and U.S. military advisors.
The government has recently secured multiple victories in regaining territory from the militants, but challenges remain in fully eliminating their presence in rural strongholds.
Security analysts view this renewed commitment as a crucial step in Somalia’s ongoing fight against extremism, emphasizing the need for sustained support, intelligence-sharing, and resource mobilization to achieve long-term stability.
As operations continue, the Somali government is expected to roll out additional measures aimed at securing liberated areas and preventing Al-Shabab from regrouping. Prime Minister Barre’s statement signals a renewed push for a more advanced and coordinated counter-terrorism approach.
