MOGADISHU, Somalia – The European Union’s new ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, has pledged to strengthen the bloc’s partnership with the Horn of Africa nation, with a focus on security and economic development.
Di Mauro formally presented her credentials to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the State House in Mogadishu on Wednesday — just three days after arriving in the country.
“Very honored to have been able to present my Letters of Credence to HE President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on day 3 after arrival,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“The EU and Somali partnership is strong and unique. I am committed to deepen it further, from security to economic opportunities, especially for the Youth.”
Somalia’s president welcomed the new envoy and praised the European Union’s longstanding role in supporting the country’s recovery and state-building efforts.
The EU has been one of Somalia’s biggest international backers, providing aid for governance, humanitarian assistance, and training in the security sector. The bloc has also supported programs aimed at boosting jobs and opportunities for Somalia’s large youth population.
Ambassador Di Mauro takes office at a critical time as Somalia works to strengthen its institutions, push back against al-Shabab militants, accelerate economic growth and ongoing dispute over 2026 election model and constitution changes.
