MOGADISHU – Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) says joint operations with international partners have killed an Al-Shabab propaganda chief and 15 other fighters in coordinated strikes in central Somalia, Arlaadi Media Network (AMN) reports.
In a statement on Saturday, NISA said the operation killed Abdisamad Mohamed, identified as the armed group’s propaganda chief, along with operative Ali Salad and 14 fighters. It said the strikes targeted a building in Miirtaqwo used to house equipment for Al-Andalus, Al-Shabab’s radio station, and a militant staging point in Tardo.
The agency said the operation destroyed broadcasting equipment and a Noah-type vehicle, adding that another fighter was critically wounded. It alleged the targeted unit had been preparing attacks in the Goobo and Waabweyn areas of the Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions.
The claims could not be independently verified, and Al-Shabab has not commented.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked armed group that has waged an insurgency in Somalia for more than 15 years, frequently targets government forces, civilians and security installations as it seeks to overthrow the federal government and impose its interpretation of Islamic law.
