ADDIS ABABA — Somalia and South Africa have pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation as the two countries discuss regional peace, economic ties and the welfare of the Somali community living in South Africa.
Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali held talks with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola on the sidelines of the 49th African Union Executive Council meeting in Addis Ababa. The discussions focused on advancing cooperation within the African Union, expanding economic partnerships and supporting regional stability.
Lamola reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while both ministers agreed to deepen diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
The talks come as Somalia continues to engage with South Africa on issues affecting thousands of Somali nationals living and working there. The Somali diaspora has established communities in major South African cities, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, with many involved in business, trade and community initiatives.
Somali diplomatic representatives in South Africa have increased engagement with community groups in recent months, focusing on strengthening communication, supporting citizens and addressing challenges faced by Somali nationals.
The issue of migrant safety has also drawn attention amid broader concerns over xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa. Human rights groups and international organizations have reported renewed attacks and tensions affecting immigrant communities, while several African governments have issued warnings urging their citizens to remain cautious.
Despite these challenges, Somali communities in South Africa continue to contribute to local economies through entrepreneurship and community development initiatives. Organizations representing Somalis in the country have worked to promote self-reliance, integration and support networks for migrants and refugees.
The Somalia-South Africa discussions reflect broader efforts by both governments to strengthen African cooperation while addressing shared challenges, including migration, development and regional security.
