JAKARTA, Indonesia — Somalia and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with senior diplomatic officials from both countries discussing opportunities to expand cooperation across a range of economic, political and strategic sectors.
Hassan Mohamed Ali, Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, held bilateral talks with Anis Matta, Indonesia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta.
The meeting focused on strengthening the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two countries and identifying new opportunities for practical cooperation.
Trade, Investment and Economic Cooperation
Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides exploring opportunities in trade and investment, agriculture, livestock, fisheries and the blue economy.
The officials also discussed potential collaboration in education, healthcare, infrastructure development, energy and maritime security.
These sectors represent important areas of potential cooperation as Somalia seeks to expand international economic partnerships, attract investment and diversify its economic relationships.
Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, has experience in several sectors that could offer opportunities for cooperation with Somalia, particularly agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure and maritime development.
Cooperation on Regional and International Affairs
Beyond economic relations, the two deputy ministers exchanged views on political and diplomatic developments, institutional capacity-building and cooperation within multilateral organizations.
Particular attention was given to coordinating the two countries’ positions in international forums, including the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The discussions reflected a shared interest in strengthening diplomatic engagement and expanding cooperation on issues of mutual concern within international institutions.
Commitment to Stronger Bilateral Relations
Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the friendly relations between Somalia and Indonesia, emphasizing mutual respect, shared interests and sustainable development as the foundations of their partnership.
The meeting underscores efforts by Mogadishu and Jakarta to translate their longstanding diplomatic ties into broader economic engagement and institutional cooperation.
While the discussions identified several potential areas for collaboration, no specific agreements, investment commitments or implementation timelines were announced in the statement.
