MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia has fully restored its independent mechanisms for managing, monitoring, and reporting on human rights, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the country’s long journey toward governance and accountability.
“For more than three decades, these responsibilities were largely managed from abroad,” the President said. “Today is a historic day as Somalia has made tangible progress in governance and stands ready to independently fulfill its national and international obligations in protecting and upholding human rights.”
The move comes as part of Somalia’s broader efforts to strengthen its institutions and assert national sovereignty after years of civil conflict and international administration of certain government functions.
Human rights oversight in Somalia has previously been fragmented, with much of the reporting and monitoring handled by international organizations outside the country.
The Federal Government of Somalia has pledged to continue safeguarding the dignity and rights of its citizens. Officials said the government will work closely with both regional and international partners to ensure human rights standards are fully upheld across the country, including addressing past violations and promoting accountability.
Somalia’s restoration of independent human rights oversight is also seen as a signal to the international community that the country is committed to upholding democratic norms and strengthening its role in global human rights frameworks.
