BAIDOA, Somalia – South West State’s new president, Adan Mohamed Nur, has been sworn into office in Baidoa during a ceremony attended by Somalia’s top political leadership and regional officials, Arlaadi Media Network reports.
The inauguration brought together senior figures from across the country, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as well as representatives of the Federal Government of Somalia and leaders from other federal member states.
Speaking at the event, Adan Mohamed Nur pledged to prioritise the expansion of “democratic elections” in South West State, insisting that his administration would continue with political reforms despite what he described as ongoing political pressures.
He suggested that some critics were attempting to derail the process, accusing unnamed opponents of spreading misinformation about the electoral agenda. He vowed that his government would not be distracted from its reform commitments.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud used the occasion to reflect on Somalia’s political history, saying the country had once been among Africa’s early democracies after independence and that efforts were under way to restore that tradition.
